Ensuring Your Workplace Safety and Compliance
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) sets out clear expectations for employers to ensure that work environments are safe, healthy, and legally compliant. No matter your industry, if you employ people or manage a site, you have a duty to protect your workers, contractors, visitors, and anyone affected by your activities.
At a minimum, the HSE expects employers to:
Identify and manage risks – Carry out regular risk assessments and put measures in place to control hazards.
Provide safe systems of work – Make sure processes, equipment, and working conditions are safe and suitable for the task.
Train and inform staff – Ensure workers are properly trained, understand risks, and know how to work safely.
Monitor and maintain – Keep up with checks, inspections, and maintenance of equipment, PPE, and work areas.
Report incidents – Record and report injuries, illnesses, and dangerous occurrences as required under RIDDOR.
Appoint competent people – Designate someone with the right skills and knowledge to manage health and safety effectively.
Consult your workforce – Engage employees or safety reps on matters affecting their health and safety.
